George Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday. He had forged a $20 bill, and his subsequent arrest was caught on tape, where he suffocated from the officer’s knee crushing his neck. The tragic incident was condemned by leaders from both political parties.
Despite widespread condemnation and promises to investigate and likely prosecute the officers involved, some in Minneapolis saw it as an opportunity to commit crime.
What followed Wednesday evening was widespread vandalism, looting, and the torching of many businesses. Instead of attempting to seek justice, it appeared that many people in Minneapolis were more interested in watching and participating in their own community burning to the ground.
Rocks were thrown at officers, the police station was heavily damaged, and widespread chaos ensued into the evening. A Wendy’s was burned to the ground as well as an Autozone. A local Target was also completely looted, leaving the store completely ruined.
President Trump promised a full investigation into the matter in a Tweet Wednesday.
“At my request, the FBI and the Department of Justice are already well into an investigation as to the very sad and tragic death in Minnesota of George Floyd. I have asked for this investigation to be expedited and greatly appreciate all of the work done by local law enforcement. My heart goes out to George’s family and friends. Justice will be served!”-DJT
While leaders at the national, state, and local level are all promising to take action and serve up justice, it appears that many in Minneapolis don’t care, or ever will. Many in the community are using the crisis as an opportunity to steal and cause violence instead of bringing forth real change.
The mayor of Minneapolis is Jacob Frey, who infamously attempted to prevent a Trump rally from happening in his city last year. The Governor of Minnesota is a Democrat by the name of Tim Waltz, who can’t seem to maintain order. And their Congresswoman? Ilhan Omar. No wonder Minneapolis is in disarray.
